“KANEKA Biodegradable Polymer Green Planet ™”-A biodegradable polymer to contribute as a solution of marine plastic debris problem through marine biodegradability
Kaneka's biodegradable polymer, Green Planet (PHBH), is derived entirely from biomass and is biodegradable even in seawater. Developed through microorganism fermentation using bio-based oils, PHBH breaks down into CO2 and H2O via natural microbial processes. Kaneka began developing PHBH in the early 1990s, aiming to create an eco-friendly polymer independent of oil resources. After extensive research and development, Kaneka became the first to mass-produce PHBH, which has since received the "OK Biodegradable Marine" certification. Green Planet can be used in various applications, such as straws, shopping bags, and food packaging, contributing to reducing marine plastic pollution. The polymer's adoption by companies like Starbucks, Seven-Eleven Japan, and Shiseido demonstrates its practical applications and environmental benefits.
